INstacompare

Ux/Ui Case study + Revamp

Instacart is a popular grocery delivery app, but like any digital product, it has areas that could be improved. Our team- Autumn Fean, Khalia Gilliam, Mohsen Alattar, and I set out to revamp the app’s design by focusing on real user needs. We conducted thorough testing to identify pain points and better understand what users truly want. Through this process, we learned the importance of accessibility and user-first design. Instead of relying on our own opinions, we made decisions based on direct feedback from users. To gather insights, we created a well structured survey, refined it through multiple rounds, and shared it on social media. We received 40 responses and even connected with users for follow-up interviews.

01 user research

Our survey results uncovered a gap between what users said they preferred and how they actually interacted with the app. For example, some respondents expressed liking certain Instacart features while also indicating they wouldn’t use them. This contradiction reinforced the importance of in-depth user research and careful interpretation of feedback. It became clear that what users say doesn’t always align with their actions, emphasizing the need to look beyond surface-level responses when making design decisions.

02 Interviews

Sarah, 34 – Busy Mom

Sarah is a working mother of two who relies on grocery delivery services to save time but struggles with price differences between stores.

Key Takeaways:

  • Finds it time-consuming to manually compare prices across different grocery stores.
  • Often sticks to one store for convenience, even if it means spending more.
  • Would benefit from a tool that quickly shows price differences in one place.

Jason, 21 – College Student on a Budget

Jason is a full-time college student managing his expenses carefully. He prefers online grocery shopping but struggles to find the best deals.

Key Takeaways:

  • Tries to save money by comparing prices but finds it frustrating and inefficient.
  • Often buys from the first store he checks due to lack of time.
  • Would use InstaCompare to make better purchasing decisions without the extra hassle.

03 My Role

In this project, I was responsible for designing a new feature called "InstaCompare." This feature allows users to compare the same or similar items across different stores, helping them find the best prices and save money, an essential tool in today’s economy.
By adding this simple yet effective feature, users are empowered to make more informed purchasing decisions without the hassle of manually checking prices across multiple stores. This not only boost convenience but also ensures that Instacart remains a competitive and budget-friendly option for shoppers. My role involved researching user needs, brainstorming functionality, and refining the design to seamlessly integrate InstaCompare into the existing app experience.

06 conclusion

01. What I learned

This project taught me the importance of listening to users beyond just their direct responses. People's actions don’t always match what they say, so it's important to dig deeper into the data. I also learned how small design choices, like adding a simple comparison tool, can make a big difference in improving the user experience.

02. Impact

By introducing InstaCompare, we created a feature that helps users save money with less effort. This makes Instacart more valuable, especially in a time when people are looking for ways to cut costs. Our research and testing also showed how important it is to focus on real user needs rather than assumptions, leading to a more thoughtful and effective design.

03. next steps

Moving forward, I would explore ways to refine InstaCompare based on user feedback, making it even more seamless and accurate. I’d also like to test other potential features that could improve affordability and accessibility, ensuring Instacart remains a convenient and budget-friendly option for all users.
